We offer a free jewellery cleaning service here at Varoshe. We have an ultrasonic machine which will literally shake off the dirt, returning the sparkle to your most precious gems, but how can you clean your jewellery at home if you can’t get in to see us?
I’ve heard lots of tales about soaking rings in gin, but quite frankly that is a waste of good gin! Instead we recommend drinking the gin whilst following these simple steps…
Disclaimer; Certain stones don’t like water so you have to be super careful with them (emeralds, pearls and opals for example), but as long as your jewellery is made from precious metal, i.e. silver, gold or platinum, and your stones are diamonds, sapphires or rubies, you are unlikely to do them any harm by following these steps. If you are in any doubt then get in touch to double check, we are always happy to help.
YOU WILL NEED
2x bowls or jugs, large enough to fit your jewellery
1x soft bristled tooth brush
1x soft cloth or tea towel
Washing-up liquid
Warm water
1. Start by half filling one of your bowls with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid. The water should not be boiling; you should be able to comfortably put your hand in it. Think washing-up temperature.
The washing-up liquid will help to break down the dirt, moisturiser and other gunk that gets caught in all the nooks and crannies of your jewellery so if it is very dirty you may need to add more soap to the solution.
2. Soak your jewellery for a few minutes until the dirt has soften. Think of it like washing-up; a baked-on tray will need longer than a lightly soiled one, so bear in mind that you may need to soak your jewellery for longer if it is very dirty.
3. Gently brush your jewellery with the toothbrush to remove the dirt. You may need to push the bristles in between the settings/chain links to push the dirt free.
If your jewellery is very clogged, repeat steps 2 and 3 a few times, softening one layer at a time. Keep going until all of the dirt has been removed.
4. Half fill the second bowl with clean warm water and rinse your jewellery off. I don’t recommend rinsing it under the tap as I’ve heard horror stories of things going down the plug hole!
5. Dry each piece with the soft cloth and voila, your jewellery should be dazzling once more!
Obviously, this method won’t remove scratches from the surface of the metal but you will be surprised at the difference it will make to your jewellery. If you are unsure about trying this at home and would like to speak to us first, then please do get in touch, we are always happy to help .
We look forward to seeing you in West Malling soon!
